As the tech industry witnesses an unprecedented surge in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, corporations are scrambling to secure top-tier talent to lead their AI operations and shape future strategies. Job portals and recruitment agencies are inundated with requests from leading companies seeking to fill the coveted position of Chief AI Officer (CAIO).

According to Kapil Joshi, Deputy CEO of Quess IT Staffing, there are currently over 350 openings for AI leadership roles in India, with at least 10 specifically for the role of CAIO. According to a recent study by Nasscom and BCG, about 70% of Indian technology services companies have already established leadership roles for AI. Prominent companies such as Harman International, Blackrock India, American Express, Swarovski, Dolby Laboratories, Netcom Learning, and several Big Four consulting firms are among those actively seeking to fill various AI leadership positions, including AI directors, vice presidents, practice heads, and engineering heads.

Srikanth Velamakanni, CEO of Fractal Analytics, emphasizes the growing importance of C-suite-level AI leadership as AI technologies become increasingly powerful and transformative. He notes that boards are recognizing AI not only as an enabler but also as a potential disruptor, hence the need for dedicated AI leadership roles. Krishna Vij, business head at Teamlease Digital, anticipates a surge in demand for specialized AI leadership roles like CAIOs as more companies mature in their AI adoption. However, she acknowledges that the role is still evolving in India.

Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Nasscom, underscores the pivotal role of the CAIO in driving AI readiness across enterprises and securing leadership endorsement. As the AI market in India continues to expand, the demand for such leaders is expected to rise. Fractal Analytics and Mirae Asset are among the companies that have already appointed CAIOs, recognizing the strategic importance of AI leadership in their organizations. Other emerging roles in the AI landscape include AI ethics specialists, governance analysts, solution managers, and robotics engineers.

Despite the growing demand for AI talent, there remains a significant gap between supply and demand in India, highlighting the urgent need for skilled professionals to drive AI integration in organizations. As AI continues to permeate various industries, the role of CAIOs and other AI specialists is set to become indispensable in shaping the future of business.
